Delhi Awakens to Toxic Haze Following Diwali

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "severe" category.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Various sections of the capital registered an air quality index above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy limit established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x higher than safe limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that covers the capital as colder weather begins.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed regional government petitioned the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".

Legal Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of medical and ecological advocates, the court approved the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several monitoring devices throughout the capital recorded pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst readings seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Implications

The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

The dangerously high levels of air contamination in Delhi have remained as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous airborne contaminants in the air has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the capital is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing dangerous haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air descends.

Medical and Financial Consequences

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the capital region is substantial, according to various research.

This pollution results in increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to cancer.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing ten thousand premature fatalities annually in Delhi.
