Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.
Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.
A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe
The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.
Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.
The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem
This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.
This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.
Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap
Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.
- Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
- Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
- Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
- Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.
A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness
In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.
With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.
The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.
Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.
A Critical Juncture
Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
