Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such drugs should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
